Beyond Green Steel: Sustainable Sourcing Trends Across Aluminum, Titanium, and Composites

Green steel has dominated the sustainability conversation in industrial manufacturing, and for good reason — steel production is one of the largest sources of industrial carbon emissions worldwide. But steel isn’t the only material under pressure to change. Aluminum, titanium, and composite supply chains are seeing their own sustainability shifts, and they matter just as much to aerospace and advanced manufacturing buyers.

Aluminum: Low-Carbon Smelting Gains Ground

Primary aluminum production is energy-intensive, and smelters powered by hydroelectric or other low-carbon electricity are increasingly marketed and priced as a distinct product tier. For buyers, that means low-carbon aluminum is becoming a specifiable attribute, not just a general industry trend — something to ask suppliers about directly rather than assume.

Titanium: Recycling Closes a Costly Loop

Titanium is expensive to produce from raw ore, which makes recycled and revert titanium economically attractive independent of any sustainability goal. Aerospace manufacturers have long recovered titanium scrap internally, and a growing secondary market is forming around buying and reselling that recovered material between shops rather than sending it back to a mill.

Composites: The Harder Sustainability Problem

Composite materials remain the most difficult of the three to address. Cured carbon fiber composite is notoriously difficult to recycle, and most sustainability progress here is happening earlier in the process — reducing scrap rates during layup and cutting, and using more precise nesting software to minimize material waste before parts are even cured.

Sustainability requirements are increasingly showing up in RFQs, not just in marketing copy — and buyers who can specify and verify low-carbon or recycled content have an edge with primes tightening their own ESG reporting.
